Canteloupes, Cherries and....Cats?
I have a cat. Actually, I have two. One, John Jacob (aka Jay-Jay) and Sassy Marie (aka the Crazy Ho). Both are known for their love of human food. Sassy, age 12 is a lover of any kind of fish. She goes absolutely insane for crab legs. This is logical, cats like fish, right? Other than her love of steamed asparagus in butter and fresh corn on the cob, she basically stays true to feline tastes. Jay-Jay on the other hand, is another story. At 17, there is no other way to describe him than a feline "foodie". If he were human, he'd be Bobby Flay, Alton Brown or possibly one of the "Dean Boys". He absolutely loves butter. He is also a junk food junkie.
Favorite chips: Nacho Cheese Doritos
Favorite fast food chicken: Popeye's bar none (don't forget the dirty rice and the mashed potatoes)
Favorite burger: Jack in Box Ultimate Cheese Burger (he used to love Burger King's Whopper with Cheese plain, extra cheese until "Peter" introduced him to Jack in the Box)
Favorite pizza: Domino's hand-tossed pepperoni with mushrooms and black olives
Favorite French Fries: McDonald's...where else? In a pinch he's been known to eat Chick-Fil-A Waffle Fries or Sonic Tater Tot's but Micky D's is his all time favorite
Now I know you think the cat is spoiled and you are right. He is dumb like a fox, often playing stupid if it will get him what he wants. I have had him since I was 22 years old and he just turned 17 on April 1. I have had the cat longer than I have had the husband or kids. Man, if he could talk....I don't even want to think about it. Jay-Jay, is one of the reasons Peter and I got married. I had dated off and on in my twenties and early thirties. Peter is the only man I dated who Jay-Jay didn't immediately decide to dislike. The cat had pee'd in several dates' shoes and even thrown up on a pair of nice Italian loafers. This had to be fate.
Jay-Jay is getting up there in years and lately his palate has taken a decided twist. I was feeding the little Linebacker and the Diva cantaloupe one weekend morning when the cat started howling, demanding his share. I looked and said you don't eat cantaloupe goofy! Since the baby decided to drop a piece right between his ears, I figured what the heck let him try it! Not only did he eat it, he requested more. He ate about an eighth of a good sized cantaloupe. I know he loves artichokes, asparagus, spinach, corn and green beans, but fresh cantaloupe? Come on!
Von's, one of our local grocery stores, had cherries on sale a couple of weeks ago. Now, cherries are without a doubt my favorite fruit (Bing, Queen Anne, Rainier and in a pinch Maraschino) . I barely share with the kids, let alone a hairball. Imagine my surprise when the cat snatched a nice juicy Bing cherry out of my hands and proceeded to eat it...pit and all! The Diva was so tickled by it that she gave him several more to eat. His lips, chin and front paws were fuschia!
I had to explain to the Diva, that the cat could have steak, corn and all the cantaloupe he wanted, but I draw the line at cherries. The season is short and they are not cheap. Worse than that, I either had to bathe the cat, something he detests, or endure looking at a cat with a pink goatee for the foreseeable future. It's almost as bad as when he was a young cat and my sister dyed him lavender and magenta for Easter. It took me weeks to get the dye out.
Besides, there is something not quite right about seeing a hot pink cat when you wake up in the morning. I don't drink much anymore, but it would still screw with my head.
